    Hello,

I think it is pretty obvious that I have a soft spot for brooches:smuggrin:.. I recently got these two and I believe they are hand painted.
Can you please help me with the origin/era for the gold one and with a search term for the girl brooch ? I can't find anything similar.. As always, thank you, thank you ! :):)

Try Mary Gregory for the black one. Are you sure the one on the left isnt micro mosaic?

Gotta wonder ... @Bronwen ever seen one like that? I don't think she's painted. The one on the left looks like enamel rather than mosaic inlay. The case on the girl is old and I'd bet she is too. The the back on the dragon looks 20th century.

Mary Gregory it is, thank you ! Not mosaic, it looks hand painted based on the small white dots that differ in size..

They look very similar, thank you ! How did you find them so quick ? :)

It might be enamel, not very sure it's actually paint..

Check the dragon with a magnet,it's too out of focus to see any details.

The one on the right had lost its pin stem and it was replaced with, I think, a straight pin.

As the seller of the Worthpoint brooch said: "what is commonly referred to as Mary Gregory glass style".

It's damascene with an unknown origin.Someone painted the blue and white areas, they are not original.

It is from Toledo, Spain. Gold and silver designs hammered into blackened steel. The colours are likely to be enamel, not paint.
A really nice brooch, probably 1960s.
The grey griffin/gryphon is silver. You can give it a gentle wipe with a sunshine cloth and it will shine again.:)
Those griffins are a traditional European Medieval and Renaissance motif, but some silly sellers think they are Chinese dragons.;)

I'd say pate sur pate rather than enamelled glass. Don't get me started on the misuse of Mary Gregory.

Agree with aj on the brooch. I've seen them with coloured accents as well.

I have a damascene dragonfly packed away, and years ago sold a few ships and a palette, all with painted accents - while I don't have one in hand, and my memory getting faulty, believe the colors were cold-painted rather than vitreous enamel...

They probably did both then. One of my mother's Toledo brooches has an enameled Spanish flag on it. She bought it in the early 60s, I'll see if I can find it.

I found an old photo, the flag is actually painted on a piece of enamel:

Thank you so much! I had no idea that Damascene brooches can be hand painted and "Mary Gregory" is surely a new term for me :shame:.. now I have homework to do! :D
Thank you for all your explanations and help !:kiss:
