I've been trying to avoid buying porcelain, but when I saw this figure for sale, I knew it must be old from the hole on the bottom. Its incised on the back with what looks like 11899 or H899 or I1899. Below that is something like: S.Daf or similar; I can't read it. There's another hole in the vase that is exposed. Looks intentional, like something else had been placed there once. Any thoughts?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I played around with the printing in Photoshop with a filter called Topaz.....this is the best I could pull up and out....I 'think' the lower word is State if that's any help.....but I could also be wrong.....just NOT sure what the upper line of text says!! It ALMOST looks like it MIGHT say 'HEEA.' .......but SO, SO NOT SURE, or as you said, it could be numbers, but there definitely seems to be a 'period' after what looks like an "A"!!!

Thank you! I wish I could figure it out. I'll take another look with my loupe. I wonder if the S is actually a G.

Also wondering if that top line could say I - 1889. but then maybe the period might not make sense ????? Ah well......gotta go close my eyes!!!!!!

It's possible. The imprint isn't very deep. Even with my loupe, I can't make out the individual letters, although I'm almost certain the letter on the bottom row is a "S."

    Bet it's Austrian or German.

I think German or Austrian as well, and probably c1900.

Very similar stuff came out of Japan post war, but the pieces I've seen (had) were slip cast and not so crisp.
