Friday I was in the toy aisle by the back of a local thrift store; me & another reg. wait there because it's right by the doors where they roll the carts out with new merchandise going to the shelves. While waiting I peeked through the windows in the door & saw the cart full of stuff being priced - and immediately noticed a big old beautiful stereo receiver on the cart. I couldn't see the make because it was sitting backwards to the doors but just by the panel on the back I knew it was something good.
I told my friend I had dibs on the stereo coming out & as soon as the cart cracked the doors I touched it and told the lady I wanted this!
It turned out to be a Marantz 4270 Quadradial AM/FM receiver in beautiful condition - with a price tag of $29.95!
I took it home & posted it on eBay & FB market place for $750 - I had a couple of offers for $400 but decided to wait till after the week-end to see what would happen.
Sunday a guy came by my sale & when he saw my vintage road bikes he told me he collected Schwinn Stingrays - and then when he saw the Marantz he made me an offer: $500 or a 1974 Schwinn 5 Speed Stingray?
    I took the Stingray!
Sunday night I listed the Stingray on eBay and within a few hours I had a offer for $600 - I countered for $675 and they accepted (during this time another eBayer offered me $500 and I said I already had a $600 offer and a little later (After I accepted the $675) they messaged me asking if I'd accept $725(!) but it was too late).
So I ended up making $675 on a stereo I paid $29.95 for - and that's what keeps me going back every day looking for the next "WOW!"
    hope you like the pics!
PS - Yesterday I was at the thrift store & bought a Gretsch limited edition Americana series guitar 'The Showdown' for $19.95 - I put it on eBay last night for $350obo!
    Good Hunting everyone!

We had a hifi set up some years back made by a British company called Quad. Time came to replace it: there were a few issues, and it didn't do digital radio.

Himself suggested the tip for the old gear.

    Hah.

I listed it on Ebay. It had cost us about £900 in 1981 from memory. Sold it all for over £450, as separate units. One went to someone who literally just wanted the fascia.

If I'd sold the receiver on eBay the shipping would have been as much as the unit - it weighed 39 lbs + having FedEx pack it safely - it would have been expensive!

I actually delivered one component, the chap paid my petrol. Packaged the other two pretty successfully. They were about 10 Kg from memory.

I had a massive Sansui once. I could barely carry it - decided to list it on a local buy and sell site with just the model number and a few pics with the description "first $1000 takes it" for a laugh.

Much to my surprise, within an hour of listing, a guy shows up with a bundle of $50 bills saying he'd been looking for one of these all his life. So I said Bye-Bye big ol' heavy Sansui, and welcomed 20 crisp $50's instead!

Something caught my eye in a trash pile a few weeks ago while driving. Turns out it was a late 1970s Kenwood KR-4600 receiver. Works perfectly! These things were built like tanks back then.

My oldest son's godfather gave him a set of Klipsh speakers that he had bought while stationed in Germany in the early 1980s. They were the large floor type models. If he turned them up over about 3 it rattled the windows. :jawdrop:

When he & his now ex moved in together he brought them with him of course. She said they did not go with "the decor". He ended up selling them. :(

In hindsight, he should have kept the speakers.:rolleyes::p

I just sold my Magnepan MG1's last week. About 5' tall, I used them for room dividers for the last 20 years :D

Someone on bikeforums said the suspension on the bottom of the back sissy bar AND the seat (Stingrays supposedly had stripes) were from a same period Schwinn Stingray krate (like the Pea Picker or Grey Ghost) + the paint (opaque red) was only used for 1 year by Schwinn - along with the condition like you said; I probably could have gotten more?

Not sure... I had a vintage 1970s Chicago-made Schwinn (also bright red) and despite what I read online, had a hard time selling it around here-- and this is a pretty bike-happy place. Local market conditions for sure.

Sounds like you did pretty well anyway!
