Hello! I have a ring I would like to know something more about. It was given to me by my dad and the only thing I know is this: it was given to him in 1978 for his birthday by an old lady. Apparently this ring belonged to her husband, who was a doctor and an avid traveler.

The ring reads "Artes Liberales Discimus" and features 6 students and 1 teacher. Unfortunately my dad got it resized a few years after receiving it, so this is why a little portion of the ring appears smooth.

If you can help me find out where it might be from or when it was made I would truly appreciate it. Thanks!

    thank you !!!

Brevet in french means Patent........which would seem to say that this ring and design is not a one of a kind....but likely produced multiple times,,
so I'm thinking souvenir .....of a sort ! Maybe from a Museum gift shop...

    750...is 18 K Gold.......so that's nice....but needs to be tested in any case,,

    584 AD...if I read that right........
    Artes Liberales Discimus........liberal arts learning....
but i don't see this as any University ring.......

I think it's a copy of an ancient Roman one. Agree on a French speaking country. It's 18 carat gold with silver - see that AR mark?

Welcome Gioele. It is a very nice, special ring.
The clothing and the desks look Medieval to me.

    I'm squinting - yes, agreed.

Can't find that precise phrase, but it's something like Learning Liberal Arts, or the Liberal Arts teach us. My Latin grammar is lousy.

Thanks everyone for your answers! Yeah I think it has to do with the Middle Ages, because the "subjects taught were the septem artes liberales (the seven liberal arts): rhetoric, grammar, dialectics, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music"

The ring has been resized as you can see from the pictures; if it was silver with gold on top of it, wouldn't we be able to see it in that area?
