A diamond tester is very useful, if it works, that is. But no use at all if you want to test the difference between jade and jade lookalikes, because most are roughly the same as jade on the Mohs scale.
Looking at the structure through a loupe is far better.

 

2nd is a jasper .... imo

 

1st one: the cicadais either jade or jade-like glass. Necklace looks like 3rd class Dushan stone.(also called Dushan jade).
They all made in China.

 

I have a Presidium Gem Tester, it has a setting for Nephrite and and one higher up the hardness scale for Jadeite.

 

That's it, Dushan, I was thinking I had seen that stone before, but couldn't remember. That's why I didn't comment on the necklace, I was waiting for it to come to me. Thanks to you I have one less thing to think about.

 

Does it test more than hardness?

 

@Marie Forjan , I just looked it up, it tests thermal conductivity, whereas the cheaper ones test thermal inertia. That is probably why it can differentiate between some stones of the same hardness, though not all. So you get a more precise reading in some cases.

Yes, the problem is there is one saying about the chinese jade market and porcelain market ------ "the water is very deep".
