Is this an original oil painting?

image.jpg I found a painting that I'm interested in purchasing. The seller has it as an oil painting on canvas.

Upon looking closer at it, there appears to be rippling of some sort on the right hand side. To me, this doesn't look like it would be an oil painting. Any suggestions?

It's just part of the painting that I have in question. I asked the seller if he could take a few pics of it out of the frame, as he mentioned that the frame was not included. I'm trying to see if it's on canvas, how the painting looks on the edges, etc.

The photo is inadequate to determine medium or what it's painted on.

But, by elimination, the fragment looks to me very possibly oil.

I've asked the seller for more pics but I haven't received a reply yet.

Here's another pic of it. To me, those raised areas, look suspicious to me as it may not be an oil painting. image.jpg

I don't know about your screen, but on mine it is about twice the size as the photo you posted.
The one you posted is so small one can't make out any details at all.

I can make it even bigger if you want, but it will be more grainy.

What "raised areas" do you mean? Posting these tiny bits is just silly. Why won't you show the entire work?

This detail looks like a fragment of a Synthetic Cubist painting. Is some seller representing it as by a major 20th C. artist? Perhaps a Braque or Picasso?

Ya, I'm using my iphone so the pics look the same size. These are pics from the seller. I had to zoom in to get a better pic. The pictures aren't the best.

It could be a build up of paint or it could be acrylic paint mixed with a medium or thickening agent like Liquitex Mediums. Some painters mix sand into the paint to give it texture. You should pick up a copy of The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques. I think you might find it helpful when you come across different paint applications.
