Only just picked up on this question.

What's alarming is that the buyer has committed to pay >$100 for what is probably the most reproduced cameo of all time, made in glass & set in silver. possibly trusting the seller's representation that it is stone & at least 100 years older than it really is. It is not worth more than $20.

@Bronwen! Going to test your eyesight!!!! Am presuming you might know many signatures on the back of many Cameos??? I've done the best I could with pulling all I could out of a VERY faint one you MIGHT recognize......would you let me know if you do???? NOT that would mean anything to me, as I'm too new at all of it to recognize anyone's siggys.......just very curious if you can see who it IS

Not off the top of my head & the edge of my eyesight. She does mention in the description that it is signed, but so faintly she can't even guess. I rejiggered the photo of the back & couldn't make out much more other than it might be Lamant/Lamont. Pieces from this cutter turn up here & there, & she has had I think at least a couple, so is aware of the name. Jan Campbell, CameoHeaven site, has a talent for turning them up.

Even if it is Lamant/Lamont, she could not ask any more for it. You would not be risking having her bump up the price if you wrote to ask if that could be the signature.

It does teach you what a really good one looks like & gives you a standard by which to evaluate others.

Thank you kyra, she's just lovely, with an unusual degree of tenderness. Amazing that the delicate 18K setting has come through time in such good condition. The shell too looks extremely thin; she has been treasured more than worn. Thanks for leading us to her.

Whenever I am finally able to identify the subject or the signature on one of my cameos after it has been eluding me, it is as exciting as making a new acquisition. Showed this guy, with some of his brothers, just the other week, but have since worked out that he is signed by François Joseph Charles Reverchon ('Reverchon/graveur'). To celebrate, took a new photo.

Bravo! Apart being now identified, he is so beautiful:woot:

Thank you, kyratango. He feels very alive to me. The best cameists took care over all the subtle curves of cheeks, necks, shoulders, etc., producing true miniature sculptures instead of pieces that are more like a flat silhouette.
