Featured Art Deco Dresser with Cedar Chest

Discussion in 'Furniture' started by DistrictDenizen, Jan 3, 2021.

  1. My boyfriend and I picked up this dresser for our first apartment! We love it and are curious about where it’s from - there are no marks or labels anywhere. We got it in Washington DC, and the man we bought it from had it for 30+ years. Its dimensions are 34w x 19d x 53h. We think the bump up in the middle and smaller top drawers are unusual, but we’re not experts. The bottom drawer is the largest and contains a cedar chest with a hinged lid.

Does anybody have any idea where this dresser is from, or it’s maker? We’re both into antique furniture and want to know more. A big thank you to anybody that can help or point us towards resources to figure it out.

Just spun it for you. Maybe Bakelite handles?

Thank you! And wow, we didn’t even realize it, but you’re right about the handles. They’re either Bakelite or celluloid. The wider part is metal. Here’s a close up!

Is there a furniture maker mark, anywhere? Sometimes is hidden in a drawer.

If you search in our Jewelry Forum, with search terms Bakelite, you will find some testing methods.

I'm not a furniture guru, but this dresser sure looks like 1930s to me.

Beautiful, but with no label or stamp it's virtually impossible to tell who made it. It could have been any one of hundreds of factories nationwide in the 1930s.

  11. Awww thank you - it was my boyfriend who found it in the first place, so all credit goes to him. We’re trying to prioritize antiques in our apartment, to gradually replace all the ikea furniture. I’ll check out the intro forum!

The cedar lined drawer in the bottom is a plus! Store wool sweaters or socks there to keep the moths from chewing them up.

    Nice start for your apartment.

Circa 1930, art deco gentleman's chest and may be English in origin. What are the non-cedar drawers made from?

Thanks for the suggestions! We really can’t tell what the non cedar drawers are made from. They’re solid wood - I’ve included a picture if that helps. Why do you think it’s English?

Oak secondary wood for drawers (which I see you have) usually point to England. I own a similar chest that is part of a suite that is definitely English.
