I am a relative newbie here. The last of my parents recently passed away. I have this China Cabinet and am trying to determine its value. It is on Long Island, New York so there is a good selection of people around with money.

I posted pics of this in another thread, now I have emptied it and got it away from the wall such that I can get a pic of the sticker on the back.

I don't know much about these things, however, it has been described to me as being "exquisite."

Any ideas on where I should start with pricing? I live in Michigan and I highly doubt it would pay to keep it and ship so far.

    Thanks.

    Todd

It is a nice one. Circa 1900 oak. Values are down but still should be worth over $500.00 at retail (Time was, it was a $1500.00 piece). Depends on how you plan to sell. If craigslist or other marketplace, I would start a bit high and be willing to bargain.

If you do decide to ship it, make sure your carrier has lots of insurance, those curved glass panels are really expensive to replace.

Years ago I worked with a carpet cleaning company and one of the employees broke a curved piece of glass in a similar cabinet in a customers house. I don't think I ever heard what the final cost of the repair was but the owner of the business was in an exceedingly foul mood for quite some time and we all knew it was an exorbitant sum. When he had calmed down enough that he could talk again he mentioned that on a regular basis from there on when preaching about how to handle things on the job site.:joyful:

Welcome to the forum BTW Todd! That style is out of favor now but I have just the house for it. If you were closer I would leave black marks on the road getting there to put $500.00 in your hand. Love it and hope it finds the home it deserves!!!!!

Thanks, I must have finally recognized it about the time you replied. I'm going to go looking for information on "Ebert's China Closet."

I love looking up old businesses/buildings/addresses.;)

In your area, I don't think $1200 is too much to ask. If you decide to go lower, call a reputable antiques dealer to see if he wants to buy it outright. I would not put such a piece on consignment, nor would I ship it. It would have to be a cash and carry deal for me to sell this, like from Craigslist.

I know some don't like links but . . . here is a "history" of the "Ebert" company.

    http://johnaebertfurniture.blogspot.com/

"founded in 1854" in Philadelphia . . . then moved to Red Lion, Pennsylvania, and then "closed in 1959."

Just goes to show you the difference in location can affect price. You'd be very lucky to get $250 for that here in N. Fl,and its far nicer than most I see.Im more interested in the treasures squirreled away inside!

I could find use, just not space, for it too. Wish I could tell you more, I actually have a cousin named John Ebert, but not related.

This was shipped from Philly using Railroad Express, went by way of Reading, PA, to John A. Schwartz at 889 Broadway, Brooklyn.

Sooo wish I had space, love it.

Mirrored in back as well? Add more insurance.

Todd....sorry to hear of your loss !!!:(
    Bin there, done that !

It's stunning.....but as others have mentioned.....there may be more value INSIDE the cabinet ......than the piece itself !! :playful::playful:;);)

& from the dust, I can see no one's handled the items in there....for a while !!

If it were in Florida, some well intentioned Pintrester would slap a coat of white or aqua chalk paint on it and call it Beachy.
