Here is another item for discussion.

The cameo is a classical figure, possibly in coral? The setting is an unusual design. No markings on the piece.

    Any thoughts really appreciated. IMG_20210102_112219_compress31.jpg IMG_20210102_112233_compress1.jpg IMG_20210102_112257_compress38.jpg

The cameo is coral. She is not clearly identifiable, no visible attributes, although she reminds me of some Dianas. Looks like she has soap or polish residue around the edges. This would probably come off with water & a soft toothbrush. This one can't be soaked safely because of the openings into the hollow tube that frames it. You don't want to get water into it.

Mount is really interesting, sort of a flamboyant take on a lovers' knot in gilt brass. Last quarter of the 19th would be my guess.

I've had brooches with similar mounts with stones in, but not cameos. Late 19th, rather going on the twined serpent theme.

Bronwen, you’ve probably answered this at some time before, but what are all the vertical ‘striations’ I’m seeing in the cameo??

The striations are little channels that allow nutrients to pass through.

Thank you. I will give the item a very careful clean. I think the design is quite pleasing to the eye.

It is lovely, and will look great when it has had a gentle clean.
The gilt brass could do with a rub with a sunshine cloth. After some tlc it could come out almost as new.

Will you show us the result?

It is proving difficult to clean. Very delicate - especially the way the cameo is mounted, and with the shape of the design.

Work in progress - the pattern on the metal is nicely detailed.

Nice job, that is already an improvement.
