    Hi all,

I have this old desk which I don't need anymore and I'm having trouble even trying to give it away! Obviously doesn't fit in with today's tastes!

Not sure what to do with it. It's a shame as it is certainly well made.

    Chris

It is sickening what is happening these days. If you can't find someone to appreciate it as it is please hide it away for a while and don't let anyone paint it.:sorry: Someday someone will be glad to find it. I want to say "Arts and Crafts" style but I don't think that is quite right.

    Welcome to the forums!!!

You may not need it...but it needs you !!
Use it for storage......or.....if you're capable....sand it down enough to bring out the lighter color of the wood...& give it a good tung oil...or wax......maybe a lighter color would then fit your home....as a real antique !!!

    Just a thought !!!

    & here's another...
Things you throw away ......you can't get back !!

    Thanks guys.

If nobody else is interested in it then I will just hang onto it for now. I have an old valve radio which looks quite nice sitting on it :)

I don't know why but the vertical drawer and door pulls made me think 1920s-30s.

It looks like 1920s-30s English to me. Are you sure its not a tiny sideboard? Dont desks usually have drawers on the bottoms as opposed to cabinets? It is a very nice thing, pity all the younguns want is Ikea now.

It's had A LOT of very dark varnish applied at some point so I've started to knock it back to a warmer colour. The bottom image being before..

Quite possibly Johnny as it never did seem to have enough depth for a usable desk. :) I could see it in a hallway with a nice old telephone on it!

    Chris,
Has it got any marks on the back were a mirror might have been attached, looks like a small kneehole dresser to me.

Is the LUFC in your Id for The Whites ?

    Indeed...Leeds United!

I can’t see any obvious signs where a mirror might have been attached.

Agree with the 30s date and English oak. Not arts and crafts but sort of art deco with a nod toward some historical precedence with those linen-fold panels. Would sell in my US market but not for a lot. Sadly, it would sell better if painted. :( Not advocating paint, as it has nice quartersawn oak there that would be a sin to paint.
