Maybe ask her frond first, and if you get turned down, then ask the nut.

Why does the chocolate have such a hard time dating? Because when he sees a beautiful woman, he turns into a cocoa-nut.

    I'll see myself out now...

The nut shell is oldest, followed by the carved design. The round and square holes are the youngest and were not made by the person who carved the design. Now you know everything!

Why is there one oval hole & one square one? And running up from the square opening to the rim, is that a crack or a deliberately made slit?

That was actually the very first thing that popped into my head when I saw this post. When did you last see a candy bar, or gum, advertised on TV? Guess the ads have aged with us, to cars, insurance, & medications.

Now and then I see tv commercials for candy when I am clicking thru the remote.
I know they run Starburst commercials.
But you are right nowadays, they are hocking diseases, insurance, meds and cars endlessly.

Thai coconut water dipper - the handle would be a stick that slides in through the round hole and is locked in place in the square hole. Wouldn't be difficult to carve a replacement...

My thought exactly. I got to that conclusion in a roundabout way though...the square hole on one side and the round one on the other clued me in. There are some simple ethnic musical instruments that use a gourd or other spherical object as a resonator, and they have the same sort of holes; usually the neck is inserted and stabilized by the square hole, with a rounded peg coming out the other side. So I realized there was a handle or such missing from the coconut; and since any attachment for an instrument's skin head was lacking, it must be a water dipper.
Cheryl got to the conclusion much quicker!
