    Hello everybody!

I am new here and to be honest, I am not a nut for antiques. They are cool to look at and I like museums and such at least as much as the next guy. However, in the spirit of full disclosure, I am mostly looking for help.

As of fairly recently, both of my parents are deceased and I am in the process of clearing the house. The taxes and home are so pricey to maintain that I am a bit anxious to get the job done and get everything sold.

I have several items that I would like help putting a value to.

I will start with the following China Cabinet.

It is about ~76 inches tall, ~20 inches deep, ~44 inches wide. I have the key.

This is the first of several items I would like some help with. I am not looking to retire but I don't want to let something go for $50 if it is worth considerably more.

Thanks for any advice you all can give me. I will be posting pics of some other neat, unique items as I get through this project.

    Thanks.

    Todd

Welcome, Todd. I'm very sorry for your losses. It's a tough enough time without having to deal with "the stuff." Lots of helpful people here.

Your cabinet is American Oak. They used to command a high price. Unfortunately, oak furniture is not selling as well as it used to.

Price is determined by how you sell:
to a dealer, craigslist, auction, estate sale.

Also where you are located. City, rural, high income, etc.

If you don't get any more response about the cabinet by tomorrow. You may want to ask your question on the Furniture Forum where the furniture people will see it.

OK Todd....this is the way it works here.
each item you want help with should have it's own thread, posted in the proper forum.
We'll need clear pics of the front, back and bottom, with any marks , names, or stickers you can see , with any information you may already know about the item.

It'll take anywhere from minutes, to a few days before enough folks...& the right folks... get their eyes on it , to tell you what you have and where you can get a handle on a fair market value of the item.

What you can sell any one item for depends on what it is, where you are, & how you wish to dispose of it !

    Your move .! :)

    About clearing the house.

First go through and pull what you and other family members want. If you are unsure whether to keep something or not - keep it. You can always sell it later. However, if you sell it now, you may regret it later.

If you have other family, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, make sure you ask if there is anything that means something to them. Grandchildren often get forgotten when things are divided up. You'd be surprised at what means something to them.

If you are in a large city, there are people who will come in and set up estate sales for you. You have to do your homework to find people who will work for you and not for themselves.

Another option, set up tables in the garage or living room. Put things out priced at one third of what a dealer would ask. Then invite dealers in by appointment to shop. What's left over can go toward a garage sale.

You don't have to do everything at once. You can do it in sections.

I would not ask a dealer to come in and give you a lot price for everything, until you have exhausted other avenues.

    What she said !!

& just because you've been honest from the get go.....& suffered a similar fate as I did this past summer......this should drive you crazy....but.....maybe save you some much needed cash.......

    Check your folks books
    back of paintings
kitchen cans that haven't been moved in a while
    bottoms of all drapes
all furniture , for hidden compartments ..
Moms sweaters & coats for Jewelry....

    Folks....lots o' folks ...hide stuff....valuable stuff.....
we here, just encountered a piano story....with a million bucks in gold stashed under the keys...........

    So...be a detective.....u may find nothing.......but you may....:)

What Komo said! We found rather expensive jewelry that Mom sewed into the hem of her dressing gown.

If the address is 'good', estate sales do well here; bringing in buyers and $$$. Your curved glass display case would probably bring $100-200 here (GA) depending on condition but less where earlier antiques are preferred.
