Happy New Year! I get what you are saying with quality. I had some newer cashmere scarves ravel. I prefer the vintage. I found a few double-side silk scarves, not many. I passed on a bulky wool sweater in a thrift shop last month, still kicking myself. Can't find the heavy cashmere they used to weave. I have two cashmere sweaters from ages ago, I do have them dry cleaned and tailor-mended. The only thing I like better than cashmere is alpaca. Mohair makes me itch.

I can't wear any animal fiber any more. Wool doesn't itch; it burns. The rest do the same sooner or later, and that's with a layer underneath. I used to love it, but now it doesn't love me any more. I can sew old cashmere into quilts and the like however, and have been known to use it for covers for microwave heat therapy bags.

The problem with cheap cashmere is that it's short fibre and moults like heck. You need long fibre.

I always wash cashmere, even my very vintage stuff. Proper special detergent, but actually in a washing machine. I've a Bosch with a silk and cashmere cycle, it's brilliant.

Two Balinese oil paintings came home from the op shop yesterday - $2 the pair. Artist's name, Munadi, and Ubud and 1983 are written clearly on the back. They're quite charming and I think were a steal. :)

It's a large shabti, rather than a mummy.

Today was my once-a-month trip to a thrift store, and I found this cast iron gavel, 9" long, seems to be one-piece casting, weighs about 2 1/4lbs.

Looked them up on eBay when I got home, expecting to see dozens, but there are none current and none in completeds. Must be rare. Must be worth millions!

    Hi,
I had one back in 2000. It was not painted and sold for $38.50. I rue the day I sold it. A neighbor's father was a Brooklyn judge and was given it when he retired. The neighbor was going to recycle his fathers gavel in the trash. I gave him 10 bucks for it that was in 1979.

If it sold for $38.50 in 2000, it would sell for $3.85 today. No matter... I've tucked it into my china cabinet. Where else to keep a cast iron hammer?
