I usually don't buy big chunky jewelry, but I was interested to find out about this piece and whether I got the stones and source correct. The large (3/4") faceted beads appear to me to be banded Carnelian. The smaller beads look like agate. There seems to be some smoky quartz faceted beads and some metal beads as spacers. It is quite long at 24 inches. I could be wrong about all of this, so tell me what you think, if you don't mind.

Think I would call the non-faceted beads jasper rather than agate since they appear to be opaque. All the elements are things you would find in a bead supply store; suspect it is the work of a hobbyist. What makes it Botswanan?

Impossible to say where the carnelian was mined, similar stones occur all over the world.

I was just in a bead store the other working on the broken coral necklace that I posted earlier. The bead stores in Long Beach all closed down during the pandemic. The reason that I thought Botswanan was it is one of the places that banded carnelian is mined. I saw some necklaces with the same type of clasp and stones being described as Botswanan. I don't know, so that is why I ask. If it is hobbyist, it is well made.

Thank you Hollyblue. One of the reasons that I even recognized it was a post that you made showing different colors of carnelian that were mined from the same hole. I always thought carnelian was in a small range of colors.

Depending on where they are mined the colors vary. The photo I posted were from Washington state which had a lot of volcanic activity,so some of the stones from the pit were naturally heat treated to a darker orange/red.

I'm seeing bits of sunstone and smoky quartz in there too. The other are right - nothing on that necklace would be out of place in a decent bead store. I've made similar often enough.

Thanks for weighing in. I was hoping it was Botswana made but it looks like I was wrong.

It is a pretty necklace, and I agree probably hobbyist made. The metal beads and clasp are all Indian and Indonesian in style, but probably made in China. Those faceted stone beads could have been cut in India, where the craft isn't too costly.

The Botswana agate necklace on Etsy is made with Botswana agate. It isn't made in Botswana.;)
Botswana is one of many countries where agates and carnelians are mined. You see a lot of it now because of cheap labour and because the Chinese are involved in African mining.
