It's actually a small wardrobe, which is why I'm so surprised. Lovely simple lines, with inset copper acanthus heads and trails on the doors, original handles, the lot.

That might be but still, what is it's function in today's world? Built in home closets have been around in USA since about 1900, quite a long time so the need to buy a stand alone closet is pretty much nil here.
Generally speaking, i would say sales of antique furniture in the middle market to be successful, it needs to be a working piece, have a clear & useful function around the house or otherwise it just sits.

Interesting. Over here, the fashion has swung back to standalone furniture, especially for kitchens. The particular piece would sit well in an Arts and Crafts or Edwardian house and we've a plethora of those in London, still.

There was some repurposing of wardrobes/armoires into entertainment centers here 10-15 years ago that housed TVs & music players but that has pretty much been nixed as flat screen TVs are now mounted on the wall.
Recently i have been seeing small english arts & crafts sideboards repurposed into kitchen islands. I don't know if it's a fad or here to stay but it does offer a unique look and new way to use them.

I, personally, would snatch that wardrobe up at that price but have always had a penchant for these. Whether or not my customers would see the value remains to be seen.

Uhhhh Ohhhh, Brad is talking like a collector now! Which, nothing wrong with that because that's what i am but not to sure if there is a profit in it.

Most sellers are collectors as well. Selling starts when your collection starts to get the better of you.;)

On another thread on a mission rocker i was gently trying to explain how some mission furniture (like the rocker poster had) you can't hardly give away while other mission with name brands is quite valuable and in high demand. I stumbled into a site that was a Calif retailer of high quality mission with many different manufacturers.
I just went back to that site and looked at their furniture archives and out of all the makers there and all that furniture sold, guess how many wardrobes? Exactly 2! Those ain't great numbers.
If you hover your mouse on furniture at top of page, it lists the main manufacturers that you can click, if you just scroll down from top to page you get to sold/archive

LOL, AJ is talking herself into a situation here!
In my case it doesn't really matter, i collect for one reason only, i like the stuff but, i am fully aware that on some/many pieces i am going to take a beating, value wise if i were to sell it all today.

Bottom line? If i had to pay the bills with my collecting preferences? I would starve to death, simple as that. :hungry::hungry::hungry:

I am an arts and crafts period collector and have a penchant for British A&C furniture. I already own a nice English A&C wardrobe but that doesn't mean that I can't make room for another. English A&C furniture is not quite as staid as the American version and I prefer the bit of flair. I certainly would not turn down some of the best American and have my fair share of it as well.

Well yeah! Brad will take it off your hands! Still, i don't know that i'd want to make a living selling wardrobes here.

    Hi,
20 years ago there was a large store in Brooklyn that only sold wardrobes. People waited outside for them to open every morning. I was there every Thursday at 11 AM. I bought perhaps 15 wardrobes from them and resold them within a month. All of a sudden they were gone. I guess the shipping got to be too much and their raising costs ended the sale.

I agree. It is so different. Maybe bring back it to life with a revitalize oil?
