I bought this cameo a few years ago and as I was getting it ready to list I saw it has a signature on the back. I tried to get a shot and played with the exposure, I also tried cinnamon but that didn't work.

Does it look familiar to anyone? It looks something like Lama NT? Or maybe Larna NT?

That is Lamant, also known as A.V. Juliot. Bronwen has posted info on this thread about him.

Bronwen- more signatures for your records. Mouhe, Neri, another that might be Schmoll/Silz?

First one is Mouhe. The signature is very faint. This cupid has a six pack, so he must be doing alot of rowing. :) If you look closely, the boat is his quiver of arrows. 20201209_162954.jpg 20201209_153526.jpg

The second cameo is signed Neri. I got this at an auction where I was the only bidder. I love the carving of the musculature in the neck and face, the tendrils of hair at the nape of her neck, and the beginnings of a double chin. I have to take care of the Byne's disease - I just ordered a typewroter eraser per Bronwen's instructions.

The last cameo looks to me like Schmoll/Silz- it has a grand flourish underneath the signature. The carving is lovely and delicate. The price of £ 3.50 lightly inscribed on the back as well- I wish that had been the real price!

As Anna says, Lamant. We just had a Lamant Teniers tavern scene cameo, which is now for sale on eBay. The owner of that one, member (f)loki, posted it here & also contacted me through CameoTimes.com. Here is what I wrote in response to the query:

The name of this cameo cutter is Lamant, not Lamont, which is what spell check thinks it should be. He was actually 'dit' Lamant, called Lamant. (L'Amant = the lover.)

Confusingly, an 1855 directory of Paris has 2 entries for graveurs named Lamant: one says 'Lamant (Julien)'; the other says 'Lamant - Julliot'. They are at 2 different addresses. An 1850 legal notice of bankruptcy concerns Amand-Victor Juliot, dit Lamant. An 1863 directory for Birmingham, England, has a Lamant Juliot & Co. An 1865 legal notice is for the dissolution of the partnership between Lamant & Charles Richardson, who are described as 'Stone Dealers and Cameo Manufacturers'. We found no other record for a Julien Lamant or Lamant Julien, although there is so much variability in signatures, we did entertain the idea that there were 2 of them. Some signatures do look more like Lamont than Lamant.

:hilarious::hilarious: And here I thought it was baby pudge.

One of his paddles is an arrow. On the most accomplished of the Mouhés I have, he gets the arrow taken away from him.

These portrait cameos are starting to come into their own. Not long ago, unless it was signed Saulini, you could barely give them away. Portraits of women other than Queen Victoria are relatively rare compared to portraits of gentleman who are not Wellington.
With that signature, think you may have a piece by Paolo Neri. The Neri I picked up earlier this year I suspect is 'workshop of'.

It reminds me of this one of mine:

Perspective was not his best thing. He did do well with full faces. (None of these is mine.)

Thank you both very much! I saw that tavern cameo and only wish my little pin was as well carved!

You're welcome. Something I did not put in is something I think I remember reading but can't find again, so didn't want to spread misinformation. I think it was originally the father who earned the sobriquet 'Lamant'.

One of his arrows is the mast for the sail. I found this engraving with a similar subject on the Met website.

Are all of these cameos yours and are they all Schmoll? Do you agree that mine is Schmoll too? I like the bacchante and the girl with the bird.

Your Mouhe is beautiful!! Venus is so graceful and again, I am taken by the sculptural aspect of Mouhe's carving- Venus has "angel wings".

Only the cameo of the girl canoodling with her cage bird is mine. It has the 'Sll' variant of Schmoll, as many of the ones I have do. The others are pix from my Schmoll file.

Forget whether it was the month before or the month after that I bought this cameo, also signed Mouhé, not realizing I had 2 with the same signature. Broken, but just so lifelike.

The carver kindly told us that this beautiful figure is a Bacchante but he didn't bother to sign his own name:

I've been watching a signed Mouhe cameo on etsy for months, a rather generic but nicely done pretty lady/bacchante/flora (I don't remember what was in her hair). I finally decided to buy it and put it in my cart. I was going to complete my purchase tomorrow (payday) and, lo and behold, someone else bought it. :arghh::arghh::arghh:
Lesson learned... again. "You snooze, you lose." But too often I'm held back by "a fool and his money are soon parted", LOL.

I've seen another described by the seller as signed 'Bacchante'. This one, IMO, is a monstrosity: a standard noblewoman type with ivy draped on her.

I have a few cameos that are labeled rather than signed. Several are historical personages, so having the name is useful. One is amusing. It is labeled on the back, in Italian, hermaphrodite. When I found it in the Tassie impressions, it was identified as Innocence.

I found a small Tignani cameo on Etsy earlier this week and purchased it, only to get a message from the seller that it had sold on eBay earlier in the day. What are the odds!
