    So:

    1497-1864.
    90% fineness.
    Minted in Lima, Peru.

My coin is 26.30g. I attributed this to how worn it is around the edges.

The shop I bought it from is one of the biggest coin dealers in the country, in business for nearly 90 years. They assured me they had a rigorous system of cross-checking through numerous experts before any of their coins were put up for sale. I'd like to think that it paid off and that the coin's genuine.

I don`t know what all that black stuff is on the reverse.
I never recommend coin cleaning, however if you buy some household Ammonia and soak a cotton bud or Qtip and gently wipe it away, it only works on silver and will not harm your coin.

Sorry Dave I'm not sure what it is you're saying. You mean, to use ammonia to remove some of the black grime on the front of the coin? For what purpose?

Sorry if that's a stupid question...

Yes, it will make it look a bit more presentable and possibly prevent corrosion or staining of the coin.
Not knowing what the black stuff is, it could contaminate any coin holder or packaging you might store the coin in.
A light clean with ammonia will not harm the coin like an abrasive polish would, rinse in running water afterwards and pat dry with tissue.

OK. I'll see what I can do.

After careful looking under a VERY powerful magnifying glass (60x or something ridiculous that I bought at some two-dollar shop in Peking)...

I determined that a lot of the 'dark patches' were actually caked on crud. A toothpick removed some of it, and careful rubbing with white vinegar and then liquid soap removed most of the rest...
