Dark spots on bronze

What are these dark spots on this brass / bronze item? They are approximately the size of 1/4 of a grain of rice.
Are they damaging the metal and if so, whay should I do about it?

 

I suspect an unknown substance has splashed on there at some point. I do not believe any damage is being done to the metal. You would damage the patina trying to remove it. While tarnish actually does pit silver I have never heard of brass or bronze having that issue.

 

So far most (80%) of the spots appear on the underside of the bobeche or drip pans of the candelabra. Could that be due to humidity or perhaps inefficient cleanup after a polishing?

 

Is there a chance that the candelabra could be plated? It almost looks like a different color is trying to come through but it could be my monitor.

 

When scratched, it's a golden yellow color, so brass or bronze.

A candlestick pictured on this site http://www.oldcopper.org/special_topics/surface_finishes.php shows a similar, although more severe case of dark spots on brass. The article mentions an electric polishing tool was used to restore the shiny and even surface, but doesn't say anything about what might cause it to look like that.

 

I don't really have anything useful to contribute. Just wanted to remark that when brass or bronze oxidize/corrode, you usually see the green of the oxidized copper.

Agree this looks possible from the way the several spots in the first pic are so circular, as though a drop settled there.
