    Hi,
I picked up this sterling compact, marked 925 and I can't make out what is inside the other little cartouche. - that is the best I can do for a photo, it is very small. I believe it says Stratton on the puff inside - I know Stratton was a British company and would expect to have British hallmarks on it. So maybe not Stratton, just a puff that was added to the compact?
    Any information appreciated
    thanks for looking

I think the puff is added. Stratton did not, as far as I know, make solid silver compacts. And you're right: with that weight I'd expect proper hallmarks on a British one.

Hunhhh, Stratton did offer sterling compacts, with guilloché decoration like this one (no enamel, just engine turned), produced by Levi & Salaman, and this one is also a typical Stratton shape, but would also expect proper L&S hallmarks. Since they weren't produced at the Stratton factory, perhaps they contracted with another company for the American market? Kind of a puzzle here...

I'll believe you, I've never seen the silver ones here! I do agree on the shape.

You're showing the mark on the backside.
What are the two marks on the front side?

I have some 1960s Zippo lighters in sterling cases. Research indicates they were made in Italy for Zippo.
Wonder if the same might have been done by Stratton. Importing the cases for their higher end line.
Does UK require sterling import marks other than 925?

    thank-you for the replies folks!
I'll have more time today to search for information on the company, maybe something will turn up.

I totally missed seeing those cluttered! I'll see if I can clean them up and maybe there will be a mark inside, stay tuned:)

it's as nice a one as i've seen......I love engine turned...but the square grid on the back gives it some punch !!

Ok, here is the best I can do. Looks like MV or could be AW. I did one in Black and White which to me makes the letters show up better (also takes away the yellow reflection from my camera body)

cluttered your spotting the other marks has helped me - I'm blown away that you could see them, I have it in hand and didn't even though I had looked closely - thank-you:)
if you don't know the maker then it will almost impossible to find bakers, thank-you for looking:)
I've been searching on and off all day, the only sterling Stratton compacts I've found have full British Hallmarks and I didn't find any that were made elsewhere and imported to Britain for Stratton. In the 1920s compacts were imported partly finished from the USA, called Stratnoid, I found a few of those but they were made of metal/chrome and had registration numbers on them. From a couple of sites that discuss how to date/ID Stratton compacts, they show the different bottoms that were used but the pattern on mine wasn't shown. I also found compacts with this shape but made by other companies. I'll do some more searching tomorrow but now leaning towards the puff has been added to the compact and not original.
