Trying to ID this thorn handled basket. I have seen them identified as Victorian from Brittish or American makers and newer by Italian makers. Any idea how to tell the age and or manufacturer?
    TIA, Bryan

And one person has one "pinned" as "Bohemian FRANZ WELZ" but with no other info, and it's a different color. sigh . . .

Check out Stevens and Williams as a possibility too.

I have my doubts it is "Welz"

Yeah . . . me too. The more I looked, the less likely it seemed.

My gut feel from the base, the colour and the stripes is newer, and not British. The handle is too thick for S&W or another Stourbridge maker, to me. Very pretty, nicely done, and I suspect Italian, mid to late 20th C.

This is the reply on the Vintage Glass page on FB. TGhis guy seems like he knows what he is talking about, but I have trusted you guys for years. So what do you think? :)

Roger HaworthHere's basically the same basket (same shape, same distinctive crimp) in a spatter glass treatment. There's no question these are Bohemian -- there are illustrations of similar imported wares in Butler Brothers and other wholesaler's catalogs from about 1900. The question is which factory. Franz Welz seems to be the most probable, but documentation on many Bohemian factories is still scarce (although rapidly improving), at least in English. Just as a caveat -- you'll find a lot of Bohemian glass identified as British in older reference books -- we've learned a lot since the Iron Curtain came down.

Seems plausible. Particularly the pink swirled color being Bohemian.
I say this because I have in my B&M a basket with a thorned handle. It is signed with an acid etch Czechoslovakia. The color of my basket is the bright yellow and red mottled color of the 1930s.

I should add that I think of Bohemian glass as late 1800s to early 1900s. Bohemia later becoming Czechoslovakia.

A couple things led me to believe this is not Welz. The decor, and the crimp. I have never seen a documented piece of Welz with either. That does not mean the decor and crimp isn't Welz. it just means I have never seen it on a Welz piece.

The Basket could be old, but also newer. In the last 12-15 yrs. I've seen quite a lot of these baskets in a lot of different colors. I have old Art Glass books that show this type of baskets.

In case anyone is interested this basket has sparked a great conversation on the Vintage Glass Facebook page. Complete with photos of catalogs with this shape from 1896. Consensus is that it is definitely Bohemian from the turn of the century by probably Harrach or Welz. Is warren around this board(I think he was the guy that was into all the Bohemian glass on the ebay board) He would love the two people who are discussing this.

He wont be able to post it there. You have to be a member and the Admin somehow lost the ability to moderate the board (so no new members can be added either)
