I was bored...I bid...I won a small lot of old jewelry at a local online auction. This hat pin was included. Its 12 inches long. And the business end is steel I think. The pretty end is non magnetic...brass and what i assume is glass -large (4cm) faceted center "stone" there are four smaller (5mm) opal like round cabochons. I thought they were probably glass till the sunlight caught them and I saw they appear to have real "fire". I did a quick gentle warm soapy water clean with a qtip and one of the cabochons came loose...here are some pics...thoughts on the "opals"? Real opals...or fauxpals?

The last photo shows that after UV light is applied, the opal phosphoreces for several seconds, AFTER the light is turned off. I googled, and this does appear to be a quality of SOME natural opals...

Interesting! I can't really say if the opals are genuine.
But do you think the center stone has been flipped?
The faceting I see looks like the bottom of a stone. And the bezel looks like it has been mangled a bit. What do you think?

All of the bezels look mangled, opals glued in? A photo of the back side may help.

The main red "stone" is faceted on the back side too. Will add photo of the back. There was no glue residue on the stone that popped out, that I could tell.

I wouldn't be surprised it they were opalite glass.

Pretty sure opalite glass doesn't phosphorece( Continue to glow or emit light after the UV light source is turned off)...but I'm certainly no expert.

Also at least from photos of opalite glass that I'm seeing online.. it does not seem to have the fire that these little stones have...
