I will, and also wood. She was kept in a wood box and I wonder if that and humidity did the damage!

    Dangerous. Oak a major offender.

Acid, I bet. Oak is high in acids, and cardboard is loaded. I know my testing acids did a number on the cheap piece of silverplate I stored them in, and that's with the bottles sealed.

Exactly, it's possible for acetic or formic acid to form:

    Another cameo from my collection.
I found two cameos on eBay that are signed by Schmoll (Silz). The quality is very good. Given the wide gamut of quality with his cameos, is it possible that he didn't carve them himself, but signed them because he sold them in his shop? He seems to be so very prolific, once you know what to look for...

Here are the links to the 2 cameos.

Could the background be tortoise shell? The cameo looks to be separate and glued to the background, but with no information in the description who knows what it is made of.

I hate when the description tells us nothing

LOL, I was interested in that one, too... until I saw that it was two separate layers glued together (and very poorly glued together, at that).
But the figure looks carved so well, it is tempting...

He lived quite a long life & probably started in the family shop from a very young age. I just think he got better, although he also got more ambitious in his subjects & when he tried to take on whole scenes, his skills were not quite up to it. The file is too large or I would attach a pdf of a doc with photos of about 30 Schmolls. When you see them together you get a feel for his style.

Some serious prices on these two, more for the gold settings. If they sell you can put them in the thread for surprise results. :)

What Marie & bluumz said, 2 pieces glued together. I'm not sure about the background being tortoiseshell; it also looks consistent with some helmet shell to me. Photos too poor to say more. He's a good carving, & the facial hair is so extravagant!

    I see the same seller has one of these;

This is a resin cameo. It is often incorrectly listed as antique, sometimes amber.

I'm no expert, but Chinese resin about covers it.

Pretty sure not Chinese, although definitely some man made polymer. We had a whole thread about these & related products.

I was going to add more about the faux marbre plaques but ran out of steam. I'll be ready, though, if someone posts one & thinks they got an amazing treasure.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Thanks for the reminder. That had been discussed before here, I think. UPDATE: I just read Bronwen's post before mine. That's it!

Reading the replies to your question makes me curious. Believing the replies are correct, this is the type of thing I would buy just to satisfy my curiosity. Of course, the price would have to remain relatively low.
