IMG_20201106_145220.jpg Hello. In my friend's collection, I recently found an interesting bas-relief made most likely of white marble. The inscription on it is A. Rodin. Do you think it could be a sculpture by Auguste Rodin? Or an ordinary fake. The nature of the signature and font is that of Rodina. I can't find similar copies on the internet. Dimensions are approx. 28.5 cm by 19.5 cm.

It doesn't look as vigorous as the famous sculptor's work.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I can't tell, not that knowledgeable about it, but love the delicate "lacework" effect on it!!!

Quick search shows he did work at Sevres factory for several years where he did low relief work in porcelain...maybe a possibilty? Is this maybe biscuit porcelain and not marble?? Signature doesn't look too bad...

the bas-relief weighs about 2.8 kg so it is too heavy for porcelain

The difference in density between marble and porcelain is very small...

The hand makes me say no. Rodin did finessed, tenuous hands, even as a very young sculptor (The Age of Bronze). This girl’s hands are quite fleshy. To be fair I’ve only seen his “big hitters” as it were, but I have never seen any if his work that was this traditional.

I don't think it's porcelain. It is very rough in places. See the photo taken in a different light IMG_20201114_081924.jpg

now I see it again the sleeve also looks like it’s falling at a strange angle!

I say this in the parlance of antiquers, because by itself this is nice decorative thing and I don’t want to hurt your feelings. It would be very cool to have found a Rodin privately owned by a friend! But for Rodin the style of the human features is wrong, and the execution of the piece is basic. If you still think it is, there are professionals who can help you— Rodin is huge in the art world, his work is extremely well documented and you’ll know quickly. Auction houses, for example, would happily take a look if you tell them you’re considering selling.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

    Good advice, imo!
