My grandmother gave me this old rocking chair today. It was her favorite piece out of all of her antiques. It's already very special to me because she would never part with it but I would like to learn more about this chair. I did take some pictures, they are in an album I created here.

Thank you for any help :)

Yeah I thought so too but it would not allow me to do so because of the file size =/

Thank you! :) it's the first in my collection for furniture. I would like to try and figure out about how old it is and where it may be from.

I can only say - I can see why you (and your grandmother) love this chair! Very cool. Is it comfortable?

    Very nice.
I would say around 1900 give or take a few years.
The lion stencil is unusual, which makes me think maybe English instead of American.

    Wait for other opinions.

It is surprisingly comfortable but I'm afraid to be sitting on it too much ;)

Agree with the circa 1900 date. Looks to be mahogany or, more likely, other wood stained to mimic mahogany. Would think just as likely to be American as British. Where did your grandmother get it?

It was pretty late last night, I'll take a better look at the wood this afternoon with better lighting.
My grandma bought it 20+ years ago at an antique store in Wisconsin.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Seems unusual - I like the lion. You said you are hesitant to sit on it. It looks sturdy from here. Does it need repairs?
