Checked my books on compacts and could not find this "KARETTE" model. The Kigu company stopped production in the late 1950's early 1960's, so we know it's at least that old. This one seems seems to have been well cared for the the original owner, very often they are scuffed from bouncing around in a handbag.

Interesting, Roselyn Gerson, Vintage & Vogue Ladies' Compacts, 2nd edition, says:--"Kigu stopped making compacts and manufactured costume jewelry instead in the latter part of the 1950's and the early part of the 1960's when the au natural look took over, and compressed powder in disposable plastic compacts replaced the metal case."
Possibly the company remained an entity as a manufacturer of costume jewelry.

Sandra, I think that book is incorrect. The Kigu family website has compacts from the 1970s and a little later. And I bought my mother one in the early 70s. I own metal compacts made by other manufacturers from the 80s and later, too. I can well remember buying refills.

    cluttered, most welcome.

Thanks so much for this further information Ownedbybear, not the first time errors have been revealed in books.
Estee Lauder have been marketing some fabulous metal compacts for the past several years. They are presently showing compacts designed by Monica Rich Kossan that retail in the $150. -$250. price range.

Yup, that's why I buy contemporaneous magazines so much - advertisements can be really useful for dating. I sold a wee Estee Lauder perfume holder recently for silly money. They're nicely made for one thing.
