    I would have said a wax seal stamp but the lettering is wrong way round .

    Dave means it is in shape of a wax seal, but the lettering should have to be in mirror for imprinting the right way:)

    Because it would only be the correct way when stamped into the seal.
    The stamp should show a mirror image.

    yes but the main job of a seal was to seal up a document, then poured hot wax and then pushed this seal into the hot wax.

    Well, maybe it's me but I see the profile of a bearded man with a helmet almost Roman looking but then I can't really see it very well. The eagle claw seems to be a popular wax seal.

    Anyway....I know nothing about the subject but I did find this showing what's said to be the seal of Francois I of France. At least one of them.

    I have the seal of William I (William the Conqueror) kicking around in one of my kitchen drawers, it just happened to turn up after 930 years, how cool is that.!
