    Hello antiquers,

Is this a modern piece from India and does anyone know about the scene?

I think it is newish - that said though, these are sometimes very nice quality even if newer. Classical scenes like this are usually based on famous paintings from much earlier times.
I think the blue guy is probably Krishna, but I could be wrong about that.

Generally from books, and I agree, it is fairly recent.
He is.:) As for the scene, the photo is tiny, but it is probably Krishna with the Gopis or milkmaids. He spent most of his time with the Gopis.;)

Wawa, are you sure it is painted on silk? That would be unusual.

This looks like a larger piece, I've seen other large works like this show up over the last few years - the last large one I saw with this style of border was a copy of an early Safavid piece, but this is probably Indian given the subject.

Yes, it is 100% Indian. I have seen those borders on recent Indian paintings too.

No, not sure. A wild guess from this novice. Here are some magnified pics under bright light. Interested in knowing what you all think.

It looks like it is from the tradition of pichwai painting, from Rajasthan, India. Originally these were (and still are) made as large cloths which were hung in temple shrines dedicated to Krishna. The one below is very similar to your scene. The fabric of yours looks more like cotton than silk, but I cannot confirm from the photos.

It isn't silk. It looks like cotton, which is what they generally are.

Am with Aj doesnt look like silk. Seems a much courser material.

Though you are right Minature paintings were traditionally done on silk.

That wasn't for you but a typo left over. I asked if they were worth a day's pay in India or more like the US or UK but then saw someone posted a link with a larger one that was priced so that gave me an idea. Sorry for any confusion
