Looking for an Opal ring similar to one lost by an elderly lady whose daughter is trying to replace it as it has great sentimental value and her mother isn’t well. It has 5 circular same size flat opals with small rubies along the outer edge. They think it was possibly victorian.

Do the stones go all the way around and what size approx???

 

The photo is blurry, but it has five opals on top, and you can see a very nicely designed gold shank on the side of the finger.

 

I think it is just the 5 on the top. I found a similar one but with oval cabochon types.I think the opals are quite flat. I wouldn’t worry about the size as hopefully it can be resized if need be?
She likened it to a claddagh ring but I’m not sure which bit of it as the top doesn’t look like that.

Maybe the decorations on the shank are shaped like hands? I can't really tell.

I think they have been pulled from family photos hence why they are so blurred. It looks fragile so maybe the band just wore through. I suspect they will need to get one made as finding a replacement will be like finding a needle in a haystack. Maybe INH could unleash her superior search skills but tagging isn’t working for me at the moment and also I know how busy she is.

 

They would have to be, there is no other way they had all these photos otherwise. It looks like her mother wore it every day, she must be so sad.

 

The design on the shank looks like a thistle.

I only wish I had one like that. As someone else said, I bet it died of old age. Odds on it was a Scottish ring and there's even less of that about than English jewelry. We Yanks generally don't see any unless it came here on someone's finger.

 

Or keep your eyes open for a gold band with those Scottish type ‘shoulders’ ( is that the pro word?) that has other stones that could be swapped out?

 

That could be very difficult. It is much easier to find an opal half eternity, than one with thistles. Could you ask if it has to be thistles (or whatever they were)?

 

I have messaged. Thankyou for your ideas. It was a long shot but always worth a try.

Another suggestion- pretty setting and looks a bit lower profile... not all opal but pretty. Also, it looks like the original ring may have rubies in between the opals on bottom and top?
