image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I know this chair isn't in the best of shape. Whoever had it before, went staple crazy with some cloth on the back and underneath the chair. It's in rough condition. I was hoping to find out who possibly made this and around what time frame. There are holes at the bottom of the legs that I believe would of had casters? I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be worth my time and effort to fix it up or just let someone else worry about.

My opinion only, and I could be wrong.
Mid to late 1800s. Probably originally caned. Yes, it had castors.
Also, because it is low, I would say a ladies parlor chair.

I'm not really familiar with furniture. What do you mean by "originally caned"?

Caning was a process used to make seats. There is machine caned and hand caned. I don't know what yours had originally. If it was originally machine caned it would indicate a later date. I'm sorry, I don't know how to tell what yours would have been.

See where the fabric is coming off the top of the back of your chair? You can see holes where the cane would have gone.

    Examples:

I should add that hand caning is expensive and there are not a lot of people who know how to do it anymore.

So it is less expensive to cover the seats and backs with other materials; wood leather, or fabric.

Hmm, I just took another look at the top left of the back.
Maybe those aren't holes for caning, but upholstery tack holes.

I think I might be wrong about it being caned.

That's what I get for waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep

ya, it nots caned. There's a cushion with a strap of fabric holding it in place, it has springs below to. Those look like they were added. But I don't see anything that would indicate caned. Thanks though. I thought about fixing it up, just to have it sit in the corner for decor.

It's a cute little chair and would look nice cleaned up with new fabric.

You gave me some knowledgable information. I always knew, that when looking at furniture, check for modern saw cuts, modern fasteners, etc. I like to stick to wooden screws and for fasteners. I'm still learning, I need a good antique furniture book.

Little different than many you see with that delicate spoon carving. Circa 1880 I would think. Having trouble telling the wood. Kind of looks like walnut but could just be birch with a stain. I also think ladies parlor chair with castors. I think the springs are probably original. There were probably other pieces as part of a set.

Not too bad of condition other than the upholstery and that is to be expected. Probably not worth the work to reupholster if selling. Not a lot of value either way and that is a shame. Would be a good project for someone who wants a nice little chair to keep.
