Some time ago I acquired 18k gold Masonic medal from South Africa. Dating this item wasn't much of an issue considering it is engraved with the date and properly hallmarked. However I'm still straggling to come up with correct value for this item.
Does being Masonic adds or takes from the value?
The item weights about 46 gram. I can't figure out what stone is in the middle and diamond looks pretty clean and about 0.4ct in size.

  2. White gold? Judging from some quick research on old masonic medals..they range from 500-2k

How did you acquire such a piece

It is yellow gold. Pictures are not that good.
The guy who sold me from South Africa wanted to melt this one. So I bought it by weight.

  4. How did you agree upon the weight an price when the piece isnt solid gold all around? With the stone, diamond, the snakes etc. Maybe im tripping out here or my visions going...but for yellow gold at 18k it has quite a silvery color? Im assuming you have had ot tested?

I had it tested and hallmarks are all there. As I said pictures were done in fluorescent light on my phone cam so there is a color difference. As far as weight. I pretty much estimated it :). I figured he is asking scrap price so 46 gram minus 10 or so for the stone would be a good price. There is antique value in play plus I liked the item.

Colours can also vary slightly on different screens. Calibrating the screen helps.
It definitely looks like yellow gold to me. And as you said, properly hallmarked.
There is a collector's market for antique Masonic jewellery, it adds to the value.

It looks yellow to me too, however its the purity of the gold not its colour that affects the value.

Absolutely, gold is gold, and 18k is a perfectly good fineness. Scrap value for a piece like this is a wonderful deal.

Gold prices aside, the colour of gold in jewellery is a matter of fashion and taste. Where I live, white gold is becoming less popular, so now is a good time to buy white gold jewellery and hold on to it until it is in fashion again. I am seeing more rose gold now, which used to be considered old-fashioned. I love it.

I can only answer things you did not ask. Something like this is a 'masonic jewel'. According to Alamy Stock Photos, this is a Past Master Jewel:

I love the snakes, sort of a double ouroboros. Enameled? Suspect you got a very good deal.

    Thanks.

Yes, snakes are enameled as well as the blue part with the lodge number.
Diamond is about 0.45ct VS1 clarity and G color, old miners cut.
I can't figure out what kind of stone is in the center.

    Welcome!
    Is it a sapphire?
Wonder why they didn't clean up the fused area on the back.

Question: re second photo from the top): do you think the "REVd" means "Reverend" or (I'm thinking) perhaps "Revered"?

I vote Reverend. The W Bro above stands for Worthy Brother, so I think that Revered would be duplicative.

A quick internet search confirms Reverend. Frank Hawkins Fisher.

I'm wondering whether the blue "stone" in the center is actually glass.

That's what I thought. At first I thought enamel, but since it is slightly raised and very smooth, glass.
