Not quite, but the Turks still make traditional granulated pieces. On the other paw, they wouldn't have strings to break.

So do the Dutch, but the coral is too shiny and red for my liking. Still Mediterranean, thank goodness, but too new. I'm fussy when it comes to traditional Dutch jewellery.

I'm merely drooling on it. Shiny red coral isn't my thing either; the odds are too good of it being dyed Chinese whatchamacallit. On the other hand .... Etruscan Revival coral might be nice! The coral certainly would not look new, since the jewelry was made in the 19th century.

    Thanks, Rufus. I thought so.
I've got a few, or maybe more....;)
Coral is one of those stones I can't get enough of. And it has special meaning to many cultures, so my ethnic jewellery collection also has several coral necklaces and earrings.
Some of the jewellery is already in our Etsy shop, others will end up there. Not the family heirloom, of course.:)

Some of my antique Yemeni coral necklaces. All coral is antique, mostly Mediterranean, through the coffee trade. Italy used coral to trade with Yemen for Arab coffee, which was shipped to Italy from the Yemeni port of Mocha.
The earrings in the first picture are old, from the Ottoman period in Yemen, but the hooks are new.

Centuries old coral, possibly from the Red Sea. Bad picture, sorry.

Detail of the same necklace, some Med and Red Sea coral has that mottled effect:

    Mediterranean coral:

This one was sold a couple of years ago. This coral may have been Asian.

The last one is antique Palestinian, a long necklace with a large silver niello amulet box. The Mediterranean coral is centuries old and re-used ca 1890:
