    Look:

All I knew was they are unused and came from a big company that was using them for “staging” per a note on the shredded cardboard box. I’d never seen this type of bolt before and was unsuccessful in coming up with keywords that would send Google to the right place. Bolt without the sleeve thing is 1” diameter (shank only, head is larger.). In desparation I re-examined the remains of the box and found an unfamiliar word that led me to the secret. Let’s see if anyone here knows what I learned today. What are they called? If nobuddy nose, I’ll give one of those oblique clues.

    Shear bolt.
Smaller ones are used for some vehicles' column mounted ignition switches.
    ~
With sleeve that stops the bolt at a pre planned depth and causes it to shear off .

Your Highness, that’s a good guess resulting from a completely logical analysis. Only one tiny issue-wrong!

Clue: These bolts are used in high-vibration environments because they absolutely will not loosen over time. Might want them in roller-coasters, train trestles, etc.

Some believe these bolts were named after a well-known Mark Twain character, but if so, the reason for that seems to have been forgotten.

During installation, the pintail is pulled off. I know what you mean, but here on Antiquers Jeopardy the judges won’t buy the term “shear” which implies separation due to forces perpendicular to the axis.

Here’s the installation sequence. A special tool is required. Click on “Huckbolt Installation Sequence.”

They state that the pin 'breaks' when it is set.
This is correct that in this instance as the bolt isn't turned to the intentional failure point but is pulled.
Essentially these same type bolts are used to shear off when set because those are tightened/rotated to the failure point.
My mistake was to assume that yours were Allen head cap bolts. :p

Shear also means as I stated above. :)

But WHY do they break or pull it off? How does that make it stronger?
