I was told they were both used to memorialize a loved one. The locket is 177 years old so definitely an antique. The brooch has a space at the back to hold a lock of hair but I have no idea if it’s antique, I’ve had it for about 60;years also. Any thoughts folks?

1843, komo. ;) People do put new photos in!

Brooch is nice late nineteenth. Little diamonds and a ruby.

Beautiful AR. Yes, the locket is a mourning locket. It is made to resemble a watch case, and would have been worn on a long guard chain just like a ladies watch.

The brooch is meant for a lock of hair, as you said. That would be a lock of a loved one, not deceased, since there are no mourning symbols. As Obb said, late 19th century.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The locket originally would probably have held a daguerreotype, if there was a photo in it. (Could have been a lock of hair instead.) As mentioned, the photograph is a lot more recent than 1843!

The back of the bar pin is slightly blurry in the last photo, and it's not easy to see the pin and clasp, nor the marking that is stamped there. Seems that it might be from the 19th century or early 20th. To me it looks newer than the locket.

I was talking about the date in the locket when I mentioned 1943.

Yes, I know. I was just emphasizing that the photo is not original to the locket. And Welcome to Antiquers, @Angela Rose !

Sorry, I get what you’re saying now. The photo is of my mum so you’re right not 1843
