I was told by the senior lady who was selling this that it was Native Indian, was she correct or just telling me that so I could buy it ?
Does anyone know if this Native Indian or from somewhere else ?

    Thank You

Great photos, wish everyone did that. Even tho some think of me as a basket case, I’d only be grasping at straws if I made any comments about it.

Definitely not Native American. It's woven from palm fiber, and could be African, possibly either Kenya or Uganda. The design pattern, however, looks more like Zulu, from South Africa.

The form itself, though, looks more like Pakistan. They've been weaving fake Native American baskets for years. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are also weaving fake African baskets.

So all I can really say is no, it's not Native American, and yes, it's from "somewhere else."

And if that lady told you it was Native American, she committed a federal offense, under the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990. It's a real law, and applies to everyone who sells something as Indian or Native American. It's also a consumer protection law, so if you want to pursue the matter, there's a government web site with more details.

Wow, Thank You Taupou. She was a vendor at a senior mobile home park where they all set up tables in the parking lot. Though I won't pursue the matter, if she knew it wasn't Native Indian and told me it was, she will get her karma.
