Item Identification

Hey everybody! I'm new here and I was wondering if anyone could me identify the item in the pictures. It seems to be some sort of navigation device or something similar, I could be wrong. It came in a wooden box that may or may not be original. The remains of the box's label probably read Palmyra, PA (Can't make out anything else). If you need any more pictures or info let me know, I appreciate any help!

The dial under the needle goes to 60.

 

I was wondering if this was a barometer or witching rod? Weather related.
Then I saw this in your picture.

Is this gold?

 

That's what I'm wondering. I don't know of any way to test it while it's in the tube. It doesn't respond to a magnet so that rules out steel and all. The needle does respond to the magnet, but that's it. It also has a spare needle in the box that's brass.

I managed to find some information by searching some keywords on Google images. It's a miner's compass or something like that. I'm not exactly sure how it works though.

Doesn't make sense to me then to allow a comment there that literally a scant few, will see.
I must've clicked on a pic which...when at full image...I don't need to.

 

You could take the gold out and sell it, might be worth more as gold than as a divining rod. I think the legend on these was that it had to be real gold.....because it would magically lead you to whatever substance was in it.
