I bought these comic books at the thrift store today. I'm having trouble finding them online and seeing if they're worth anything. Are they first editions? 20170908_165741.jpg 20170908_165754.jpg 20170908_165741.jpg 20170908_165754.jpg 20170908_165759.jpg 20170908_165804.jpg

The text at the bottom tells you the name of the book and issue number. A google search for each will show you many for sale. Yours look to have had the covers removed and were meant to be destroyed. Zero value.

Thanks. I was wondering why they didn't have the same covers as those other editions.

Someone might buy them because they can separate and frame them.
I'd try eBidet as a group sale.

It's a common practice with pulps that instead of returning unsold items to the distributor for credit, the retailer simply tears the cover off and returns that as proof that the item was unsold and destroyed.

I knew it was done with paperbacks, but I hadn't realized that these were missing their covers since this was my first time buying old comic books. I had assumed that they might be a cheaper version of the usual editions and at 25 cents each figured I had nothing to lose by buying them.

you lost a chance to say no, to something you didn't know about.....

    I hope that's a lesson learned ....cheaply !

Well stated, komo! I can only wish that all of my lessons about collecting were this painless!

Some of those bronze age comics (Incredible Hulk #181) that included a value stamp to be saved and then mailed in for discounts are worth thousands less without this stamp. Like baseball cards, it is all about "the player/character" and condition. Also like baseball cards, the "rookie" (first appearance of a character) comics are worth alot more!

Live and learn. It is better to conduct the vast majority of your research prior to purchase, not after.

I love collecting comics and my grandkids love them as well. Keep looking and make sure you contact me if you come across an Amazing Fantasy #15!

The only thing is if you're out saling and thrift hopping you see things you know squat about and look like they may be good.
If you have a phone you can search on it doesn't take long to check.
For 25cents each I would've bought them just to read. :)

Agreed. A lot easier to be resourceful nowadays, king. To your point, you sometimes need to balance risk and reward. In cases like this, it can fun to roll the dice.

In some of my personal experiences, a little knowledge was a dangerous thing on many occasions. Usually, burned by fakes....rs prussia copies, dali fakes, etc.,

This is one of the reasons that I love this forum.....equip me with the knowledge to make more informed/educated decisions.

Yeah, the only value is to someone who wants one to read (and not have to touch their mint one) or to someone that does upcycling items.

I'm foremost a comic collector myself. This is as good a start as any. ;)

What year are these 25c comics? If memory serves me correct the early 70s?

Me and a few of my friends used to collect comics in the mid 70s. I recall the superman #1 at that time was about $3,000.
