    Hi everyone,

    So this seller in Italy
sold it to me as belonging to artist G Palanti pencil on cardboard portrait work. Could someone help me verify this. The signature does look similar...
Any opinions on the work? The frame is absolutely gorgeous.

    Best!

While there is some similarity to the signature, I am not sure that it or the art matches. I also seem to see G. Nalanti or G. Valanti. Could find no match to either name. Also, this looks more like an etching than a drawing to me.

Probably titled "Laughing Girl" or some such. Says "Buono Anno" or "Happy New Year" above signature.

That paper looks awfully white ? Could you take a pic of the back without that matting?

The surface decoration of the frame is called Sgraffito.

I agree with Brad. The paper does appear to have plate impressions like you would see in an etching.

    Hi!
Thank you for the info about Sgraffito.
Here are some pictures without the frame. I don't know much about etchings but it does seem like one. It can't only be pencil and the drawing does feel thicker to the touch. The cardboard is thick with the paper completely embedded in it.

Indeed the similarities to the signatures is disturbing and the art does not fully match. It is an etching ! Need to develop my eye in distinguishing these techniques...

Sgraffito is a technique which seems to date back to the 16th century but I think this is early 20th century. Maybe the frame is older...

Your new pic of the signature shows a GP swiped in to the wet ink with a stylus so think the name has to be Palanti.

Sgraffito frames are still made today. Your frame has some age but it's difficult to tell how much from you photographs.

You are totally right there are some similarities in the expression I guess I could attribute it to him. Thank you!
