    Hi all,
2 pieces I need help with.
    any information appreciated
    thanks for looking:)
#1 is attached to a wood base but I don't believe it is original to the piece, it is about 5" wide. A big hunk of glass that you look through, knob on side adjusts it, there is a level inside/back of the glass (circle part in 2nd photo) and a level underneath

the little glass pieces move, one is red, the other is green and you can see through them. The glass piece at the back you can't see through but it moves up and down

here is the level on the bottom

#2 is a small container, about 3"H x 2"diameter. Piece inside comes out and the sight? piece lifts up.

I'm not sure if you need a key for the pieces circled?

Would the top ones red and green glass be around the same size as a photographic slide? Just a guess but I think they do use these colour filters in photographic processes. They are both really interesting items, I especially like the bottom one but one no idea what it could be.

thanks Houseful, I think they are interesting too:)
the red and green glass pieces are small, 3/4" x 3/4". I wondered if maybe for photography but with the levels I'm stumped.

That’s a bit small for a slide. When I go to the opticians red and green filters are used when they ask if something’s clearer or not so maybe for ocular/medical use in some way?

No knobs missing, a key is used. They’re for error adjustments, usually there’s another one on the side too.

I think #1 has something to do a bubble sextant, the green and red shades and the reflector are similar to parts you would see on a bubble sextant. Maybe try contacting Bill Morris on the blog you linked to.

I heard back from Bill Morris:) I've never heard of an 'alidade', will have to see what I can find.
    Good morning, Mary.
I think your mystery object is part of an alidade that would have sat atop a compass repeater in order to take horizontal bearings of distant objects. It is incomplete, but would make an interesting paper weight.

I suspect it may be of Soviet origin.
