@abdel Beautiful beads, nicely polished, warm colors, congratulations!

Re origin of horn, well, lessee... There are really only so many types of horn that are suitable for bead making. I am not a specialist on horn but suffice it to say that although thousands of animal sources are around both now and before, not all make good hard durable beads.

My guess is that your beads are made from bovine horn. I e, cow or bull. It's a logical conclusion because there is more of that than almost anything else in way of horn available for jewelry making. In India, China, all of Asia actually, and Africa, South America, too.

To think that someone could have "wasted" rhinoceros horn on beads is not very likely. It is worth more ground up for making aphrodi** [you know--can't risk being censured here] in the Orient. Same with any kind of ivory which traditionally is light in color also. Not that it couldn't be dyed but why would anyone do that with ivory that is more desirable when recognizable as light.

So my guess is from the families of cow/bull horn, bovine. Cheap because of easy availability everywhere and only worth what can be made of them, knife handles, beads, trinkets.

I have never thought it wrong to make useful and beautiful things from animal sources when they are readily available as part of the food chain.

To purposely kill or maim animals to harvest their parts for profit is totally disgusting to me and I applaud and thank all good souls who work to stop that practice.

The chemical composition of horn is the same, whatever bovine it came from. Color can be variable in a single horn and it can also be bleached or dyed, so it may not be indicative of any particular species. Horn beads are made in a number of countries, using horn from cattle, water buffalo, and other species. So it may not be possible to say what particular type your beads are.

These are all made of Philippine water buffalo:

People eat beef (also bovine, like the beads), and they wear leather. The bones are used as well. Sure, cattle is reared for profit, but I don't think it is generally frowned upon.
I don't eat meat btw, but I don't think badly of people who do.

May I add that I am not trying to start a Vegans R Us thread here. I am not against eating beef and I wear fur too, rabbit and fox, both pests if allowed to profilerate unchecked.

However, it is well known that in some faraway lands where people are very poor anything that can be killed and sold is tolerated.

What I meant to say, and thought I had, is that killing rare and beautiful animals because something on/in them has become valuable as luxury items for the very very rich is something I can't abide very well.

Ivory is one of those things.

No one NEEDS ivory for survival. Even pianos can now have keys made of other materials than ivory.

Meat to be eaten and when part of the food chain we've have learned to accept. Frivolous killing for other reasons than to eat is not acceptable to me. And if some animals are killed for their meat and their furs and other parts are byproducts it's alright with me too.
