A week or two ago there was a lengthy thread which concluded that Quirkygirl's porcelain plates were by Nantgarw. Having collected ceramics since 1985 I was fascinated as I have never come across a piece of Nantgarw. I looked at the photos and the pattern was indeed a Nanthgarw one (but other factories could have copied it).

With the post fresh in my mind I was amazed at the coincidence of this piece turning up in a mixed lot at our local auction this week. The pattern is absolutely identical to Nantgarw pieces sold on the saleroom. It measures 27cm and, apart from some fading to the flowers, is in very good condition. It is marked with a pattern number 1381 and I believe that Nantgarw rarely used pattern numbers so the mystery continues. It is however extremely translucent. I have written to the Nantgarw museum and will keep you informed.

Thanks again to the forum for constantly educating me. IMG_8299.jpeg IMG_8306.jpeg IMG_8310.jpeg IMG_8311.jpeg

Cor, that's lovely. Look at the fineness of that porcelain.

Speedy reply from the Natgarw museum "Hello John. This pattern, used by several manufacturers in UK and France, derives from the 18C Sevres ‘Pois vert’ pattern. Based upon the shape and moulding I do not believe this was manufactured at Nantgarw. The pattern number may help you identify the factory."

So there we go. It wasn't expensive and will almost certainly sell for more than it cost but that piece of Nantgarw remains elusive. Now the hunt is on for which factory used "Pois vert" pattern with number 1381.

Whatever it is, it's absolutely lovely! I love "coincidences" like this.

Ah that makes more sense. It could be a Billingsley piece from after he moved from Natgarw to Coalport.
