P1013206.JPG P1013206.JPG P1013211.JPG P1013208.JPG I find Gumprich & Strauss Batavia Victorian playing cards (1890) Batavia I learned was the capital of the Dutch East Indies (Jakarta) My parents lived in Jakarta for several years and my mother collected a lot of flow blue at the "flea Markets" . This soup bowl I picked up at an estate sale last week for $1.00. The son thought all of her stuff was just Junk. HA. I got lots of good junk at that sale. I am assuming the time period would be late 1800's. I am also assuming that Gumprich & Strauss were not the manufactures but rather exporter/importers. I would like to sell this piece but wanted to be sure to represent it correctly. Any info on the mark would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Lark,
That is the most flow blue I have ever seen on a plate. I sold a mulberry one back in the 1980s for 125 dollars.

I was able to translate with google translate . it is hard to read as it translate into broke English but great info. I also found very good info on pieces I have of my Mother's that she collected while in Jakarta. Her pieces are probably Museum quality. Here is what i copied from the above text that pertains to Gumprich for those that are interested. thank you again for the link . A wealth of knowledge.

The third example of an importer-

    wholesaler dealing in pottery,

is the company Gumprich & Strauss, where-

of a logo, consisting of a sail

ship with the company name, is known ( fig. 19 ).

Gumprich & Strauss was founded in 1847

in Frankfurt am Main and had its main

office in Batavia, as well as a branch office

in Surabaya under the name K. Hinlopen &

Co .. The company was founded by the gentlemen

Gumprich and Strauss, who are the person-

led to 1862, in which year the leadership

passed into the hands of Rudolph Still. After

his death in 1892, ownership passed

to his widow and two sons. 39

    Plate with the logo

    of the firm Gumprich

    & Strauss, pottery

    with print decor Creta,

    logo with Gumprich

    & Strauss / Batavia and

    a three-master and Creta,

    attributed to one

    factory in Staffordshire,

    England, c. 1880, h.

    2.5 cm, diam. 21.5 cm

    Gumprich & Strauss had extensive

trading activities in the Dutch East Indies, where

it was active from circa 1850. The firm

engaged in the import of all kinds of

the goods from Europe, America and Japan,

and exported raw materials and agricultural

Products. The Java Bode of December 23

    1857 and January 27, 1858 mentions un-

the other the import of window glass, furniture

bels, yarn, buttons, silk fabrics and Rhenish

wine. An ad from fifty years later,

from 1909, mentions that the company as a representative

appears more frequently for Moët, among others

et Chandon (champagne), Bayer (paint), en

    Hulstkamp Molyn & Zoonen (gin) 40 .

In addition, the company also owned several coffee

fie, tea and quinine plantations ( fig. 20 ).
