Spent an evening at a great auction set in a lit and air-cooled gazebo the other night. Great atmosphere with even greater lighting. It wasn't the stark blue fluorescent I've come to expect from the flea markets, resale shoppes, and auction houses out here, but a nice amber incandescent :).

UNFORTUNATELY since my optics aren't cooperating, I only have pictures of the most expensive item I bought right now. I really didn't go too crazy, there wasn't much I was interested in or knew I could turn a profit on.

The pictures I'm attaching to this thread are a pair of spelter statues I paid $100 for. I almost made out like a bandit with $50 for both, but the sweet old lady next to me ran up the price :(.

They're HEFTY, in an iron base and about 20" tall. I listed them at $300, although that seems pricey. Realistically I'm thinking $225-250, I keep getting offers for $200, but I'm not in a rush.

    What's UNPICTURED?

A replica colt 1860, a revolver the south used in the civil war, it's a "BKA 218" - basically non-firing movie prop. I paid $10, they're worth around $60 in my area. Give or take $20. I paid $10.

A large, large ceramic, OLD stoneware mixing bowl with brown and green drip glaze. I paid $10, I think $40+

This folk art portrait of a woman and a cow for $5... It's water damaged, but in a nice, old wooden frame. I'm kind of a sucker for art, I hate seeing it not bought.

Brown haeger planter I paid $5 for which I'll sell for $8-10. Small profit on that but it was part of a bundle.

Old hand carved wooden puzzle box, I paid $5 for it... It's small... Definitely TBD on what I'm selling that for :p.

Lastly a tall flower vase, probably around 12" tall, "Cermicas S Bernardo". Pretty gradient, goes from a light darker green to a seafoam, pink flowers at top. Super understated look, I stole it for $5, it should be worth over $40. We'll see though. I'm not finding a lot on these.

Sorry to ruin the excitement with only having pictures of one item. I promise to update soon!!!

What do you guys think of these statues? I've been referring to them as fisherman and huntsman. All of the other ones I found like these were broken and worn. I'm still trying to determine if they were restored, but I AM seeing slight patina to the gilding in certain light...

I'd call the one a falconer, and the other might be a Swiss Guard, but they look to be in good shape.

LOL @ " but the sweet old lady next to me ran up the price :(."

Yeah, some of these sweet old ladies are not so sweet, more like sharp dealers with a keen eye & deep pockets that have bested me more than once at auction.

    Or:
"That nice young man next to me kept bidding too, and finally outbid me.";)
Yes to the falconer. And you probably mean a Swiss mercenary, with the pike.
The Swiss Guard is the last remaining Swiss mercenary army, in service to the Pope. They have specific uniforms, with longer trousers than on this statue.

I let the falconer go for $80 today at the flea market I sell at. I like selling there to get rid of extra inventory that's not worth moving online for whatever reason. I brought the statues just for the heck of it, really :p.

Some older gentleman fell in love with the falconer, we went back and forth for ten minutes. I have a pretty big weakness for grand parent folk and anyone that really appreciates a piece. Maybe I could have gotten $20+ more for it, but he'll take it home and enjoy it so I can't complain :).

heres the drip glaze bowl, what do you guys think is a fair price? Looks old... but ceramics are NOT my strong suit. I have no idea on the identity :(.

It measures 4 1/2" tall and 10" wide, about 3/8" thick

There's a really nice crackle to the glaze, the white clay looks old... The mouth is kinda oblong like it was handformed...

But why isn't the inside glazed? And the flat, unglazed foot at the bottom, I'm stumped

    UPDATE:

Through heavy thinking, I realized it wouldn't be glazed inside if... ITS A PLANTER. I'm closer. Now referring to it as a "dripware planter"

    we're getting somewhere, friends

I ended up pricing the bowl/planter at around $30 and selling it as an unidentified possibly majolica jardiniere type deal.

Onto my next piece from the same auction, I absolutely stole this victorian-era painting for $10.

I saw the open weave canvas, board, and nails.... Then I saw no one was interested in it at all, lol. Thank you, art unenthusiastic indiana!

    The dimensions are 20 x 16 for the actual painting, 21 1/2" x 17 1/2" with frame. Price TBD

Your painting appears to be Edwardian rather than Victorian.

I may be mistaken, but I don't believe they used nails in that period for paintings

The gilding and frame style does have a strong Edwardian vibe, though.
