I would NOT pay $70 for this painting.
The perspective of the boat is off.
The red signature looks contrived at best.

It is definitely a painting and quite old by the look of the back of it. I'll see what I can find with the signature but there might be some clues. Is the a name of the ship painted on the ship?, is there any writing on the back of the painting?

I'm not exactly what you're referring to....the 1st image is pretty correctly oriented, the 2nd has distortion to it.....could that be throwing you????

The masts are tilted to the viewers left as if the ship is rolling on a wave but the ship itself is sitting straight in the water with the prow positioned as if the ship is flat on the water. If the masts were straightened to a 90 degree angle on the theoretical vessel the ship itself would be canted badly to to the viewers right with the deck hands about to fall in the water. But maybe my old eyes are wrong.. Who knows!

I don't agree. She's heeling over far enough to see her sheathing.

Maybe it is the angle of the piece where a figurehead would be on a more ornate ship playing with my eyes. Maybe I am just nuts. Maybe a glass of wine would straighten it up... :)

The bowsprit will goof up your perspective almost every time.
    Watch for that. :)

Excellent point Aquitaine! I am discussing the picture that the OP, SSlava, posted in the first post on the thread. Another glass of Chardonnay and it is hard telling what I will be discussing...:p

I think we're talking about the one that looks much like, and probably is, the Constitution. The black and white one. :)

Yes, that's the one. I was looking at the bowsprit (got to use my new word;)) and it indeed was skewing my perspective.
