Silver Serving Dish With Lid

My grandmother asked me if I could figure out the maker of this serving dish and whether it was sterling or plated. I've looked at a lot of different pages regarding hallmarks and makers marks but have had no real luck in figuring it out. Hoping someone here can help. Thanks!

The last picture is the one with the markings. It seems to be a lowercase C, then a 5 point crown (with a cross as the 3rd point) over top a shield that has two, tailed-creatures facing each other with a tree between them, then a stylized S.

It's silver plated. Made by a firm variously called Continental Manufacturing, Continental Sheffield and Continental Silver.

Just FYI, I've never seen one of these in sterling. They were common wedding gifts in the 50s and 60s, when folks still used silver on the dining table.

(sigh) Silver hoarders. There's always one. Jane and Joe Average don't want to deal with it. They're too busy running Tommy and Susie to football matches and music lessons, if not actually working.

 

I agree, everytime I see one I check it, but sadly I've never found a real one...yet. That said, maybe all the other silver hunters feel the same way, and because of that perhaps someday I'll find one, like this:

Things do turn up, but while I did find a tray in sterling once, I've never seen a covered vegetable that was. I look every time, just in case.

 

I think that's for meat, not veggies. Those drain lines are usually meat.

 

Good catch; I don't I've ever seen a meat dish with a lid before. Never seen one with the drain lines in sterling either, for that matter.

 

Could be a meat platter and a serving dish that had nothing to do with each other originally. Maybe someone just turned the serving dish over on the meat platter and decided to use them together?

 

That is entirely possible. Does the lid have the same mark as the platter?

likely for a turkey or chicken roast .

 

The lid has no markings on the inside, but we're pretty sure they were meant to go together. Same design and perfect fit.

I had 10+ pieces of a silver plate collection that all went together to make several different serving platters and detachable handles so lids would lay flat and be used for other pieces. They were all monogrammed with a wedding date in 1910. It was amazing what could complied with those pieces.

I'd say it's for a bird, rather than other meats. Beef, lamb or whatever would have been sliced on a platter. Your bird was more likely to arrive with a cover, awaiting expert with knife.
