There is an irritating story behind this stupid bench and the only satisfaction I can hope for is to sell it for $35+. Its finish with a sanding disc suggests it is no treasure, and yet there seems to be some "age to it" and quite nifty construction, too. Perhaps there were extra adornments at one time. The seat is about 10 inches across and it's about 4' long.

Is "vintage Oriental" about the description? Or can it possible stretch to "antique Chinese/Japanese" whatever? Does that coating qualify as lacquer? Any idea as to wood? Are they being churned out by prison labour and sold in Dollar Shops even as we speak?

    Thanks

I wish you would comment @clutteredcloset49. You can be as rude as you like. I bought some useless stuff at an estate sale yesterday because the seller was giving me a fridge. She'd given it to someone else when I went to collect. I was fridge-size generous paying, so if the bench has any merit it'd be good to know.

I would not call it antique unless I knew it to be 100+, so I would call it vintage, JMHO ;)

I see one definition of star gazing is "absorption in chimerical or impractical ideas", @komokwa. This vintage rustic authentic Chinese peasant scholar's hand-carved narrow weathered wood (exotic oriental tree wood) bench with distressed finish has copped my wrath unfairly. I should just have smacked the seller.

Think vintage is as good as it gets. I'd have bought it in a heartbeat and would sell it for double what you are considering. Do think it an import store item of unknown wood. Probably a lacquer finish.

I don't mean to sound foolish but I do not understand why you don't like this. I thought that star gazing was to bring out and feed the imagination. Probably just me needing someone to break things down. Ha ha.

    I didn't know I was considered rude:(
My original comment was that it was Asian, that was before I actually read what you wrote.
I've got to stop opening threads looking at pictures, commenting and then reading what was written. It's a bad habit I've gotten into.

@clutteredcloset49, I didn't consider you rude for a second. Please don't think so. I invited you to be rude about the bench or my ignorance. And @komokwa I was amused that 'stargazing' might mean I was being impractical hoping to find merit in it.

It's good to hear @verybrad say import store, more $ and some encouraging things.

It is a perfectly serviceable, stout, quaint bench, @ulilwitch, but being thwarted on the fridge left me well in the red. I don't dislike it, but would have liked it more with a Westinghouse attached. I had no problem with Komo's stargazing comment and am surprised you would misinterpret my response.

Whether it is brand new and fake aged I truly don't know. I've guessed "Chinese" but maybe it's not. I genuinely know nothing about it. It may even end up staying for a while, though my tushy doesn't welcome the prospect particularly.

Thanks, @kyratango. I see the person in your link is also full of "don't knows" but she sees big money in hers, which is terrific.

    Thanks everyone for your opinions.

Could very well be elm. Whether it has good age or made in the last 40 years, I don't know. Think the latter is more likely. Any time I see that black applied in inconspicuous places, I am skeptical.
