Featured Which one of these doesn't belong?

I purchased this Inkwell set. The tray and crystal inkwells are marked Elkington and Co. C1913 London.

The sterling item in the middle is hallmarked Henry Perkins & Sons C1918, Birmingham and is engraved W–XMAS-1919 and weighs 17g.

Questions

1. Does the sterling item in the middle belong with a writing set?
2. The inkwell set - Elkington & Company has different hallmarks based on the city - It is marked London but the maker hallmark is that of their Birmingham mark?
3. Does anyone offer info on values?

Elkington registered that mark in London in 1906 - and yes it does match their Birmingham mark of the same period. No problem with that.

As for that "item in the middle" - seeing only the top doesn't really help much in answering question #1.

 

It is about 1" Tall X 1.5" in Diameter - The lid pulls off and is hollow inside. Thanks.

 

But there's no indent to hold it on the tray, right? Clearly "added" at some point - neither the same maker nor the same design as the rest - but could have been used for stamps, I suppose.

 

No - No indent to hold it in place - I didn't think it was part of the original but wondered why they included it as part of the set. Thanks for your help!

Maybe the seller got it that way from a prior owner. Sometimes things just end up together.

 

THe middle thing looks like a pill box to me. It may not be part of the original but it looks good with it. Lovely,lovely set !

Maybe? I know if I had to sit down and write a letter with pen and ink I would need some pills beforehand to do it! Worst part is I am left handed so it would end up looking like a Rorschach test!!!

Yes!

 

An inkstand - in solid sterling silver - which this is - sells for quite a few hundred dollars. Certainly more than I've ever been willing to spend on one.

The round thing is a pillbox.

If there ever was anything that went between the inkwells, it was probably a rocker-blotter, similarly made of silver, although I dunno if that was the case here.

Very beautiful set. Something like this would've sat in the middle of a huge partners' desk...



You'd have one inkwell facing one way, one well facing the other, and then pen-trays for each user.

One ink well for red ink one for black ink. Would still be useful for on a partners desk.

It has pen-rests on both sides. That's what indicates it goes on a partners' desk.

Bit late, but yes, pill box and nothing to do with the desk set. I'm saying pill box, but usually these were for little breath freshener violet cachoux.

It's not uncommon to get different assay office for the same maker.
