My name is Chris Miller. I am a retired high school teacher from Ohio. My wife and I are not big into antiques, although i love anything antique that has to do with chess. A friend from my chess club is moving from ohio to India and has asked me to sell his antique end tables. He really asked the wrong person, but I am hoping as a member of this forum i may become more knowledgeable about antiques. I am really hoping to see something about antique chess sets/books/boards. I have been playing in chess tournaments for over 43 years, so I am a fan of the game. I have a lathe and hack at it trying to make chess pieces. I hope to make a set before i die (i am 55 yrs old). I am looking forward to meeting some of you.

Welcome! (Speaking of chess, have you seen the movie "Queen of Katwe" about a Ugandan chess prodigy, based on her true story? I found it quite charming; I turned on the English subtitles, which was helpful.)

I see I joined a forum that supports the military. That is soooo nice to see. I have 3 sons, all of whom were in the military. One was in the army, now a police detective; One in the navy, now a police officer on weekends and works for army corp of engineers; one is currently a Lt. Colonel in the air force. Need to also mention my 2 daughters...one is an RN, one is a rural mail carrier. Keep up the good work guys/gals with your military support :)

Nice, my son started in Seals, got through hell week, but then transferred to work on sub tender ship in Guam. I didn't ask why he got out of the Seals. i will tell him for you...also want to thank you for your service and your son's service. I was already in college at age 16 and on my way to be a teacher. i tried to join on the buddy system at 16, but parents wouldn't sign. Although I was never in the military, they have my highest respect!

    Excellent all! :)
Sorry he stopped though. Must've had a good reason but he stayed in and moved on. :)
Do you know what his rate was/is?
Do you know which tender that he served aboard?
My first ship was a destroyer tender in Pearl Harbor, the USS Bryce Canyon AD-36.

Not sure about his rate. I mispoke...it wasn't Seals, it was Swick. He went from there to cryogenics. He was on the Frank Cable in Guam. He also went over to Haiti on that aircraft carrier to help out after that tsunami? Then he came home and went into the police academy.

Welcome. I am also new and I'm pretty sure you are going to love these guys. I've put some pretty mundane things on here and they always have something useful to help me with. Have fun and thank you and your kids for serving our great country
