Unusual hinged ring- anyone want to play a game?

I picked this ring (If it is a ring?)up today partly because I like banded agate and partly because of the unusual design of the band that I haven’t seen before. Googling doesn’t help much as I don’t think I’ve got the right key words.
The only thing I do know about it is the year of manufacture. For a bit of fun would anyone like to play along and guess and see who gets the closest?.
No prizes just my usual undying admiration of your accumulated knowledge as I’m sure someone will be spot on!.
I’ll hold back the photo of the mark to begin with and post it tomorrow but any other information gratefully received.
    Thankyou :)

Shawl pin? although no pin to anchor it. I've seen some wacky inventions of this sort. Patent date may not be when it was made, but, 1885?

My own weird brass & faux coral cameo gizmo has a patent date of Oct. 12, 1913. Will try to photograph when there's sun again.

I have a scarf ring that can be worn like a finger ring. That may be what's going on here. If so, then it would have to date to a scarf ring era. If not... it could be any darned thing.

That would make sense if you can’t get a ring over your knuckle.
    Thankyou.
Scarf ring did occur to me but it’s quite heavy. I love an oddity!.
Going to visit parents now for the first time since Christmas so I’ll post the mark this evening:angelic:.
Thankyou for playing :) . Someone’s quite close....
Hope it is a date of manufacture not a patent date or I will have led you all on a merry dance :hilarious:

Have you try it on your hand to see if it is comfy/wearable?
For the game, throwing my guesstimate date 1915, 18th March :joyful:

    Ha! I object :bored:;)
The date is for the registering of the design:joyful:
I persist it was manufactured on the 18th of March.... :)

Have you evidence of the year as you are somewhat vague on that minor detail?......methinks insufficient evidence has been produced to substantiate your claim :p:hilarious:

    I persist that it's a shawl/scarf ring.

    As threatened:

Gizmo completely closed.jpg Gizmo closed side.jpg Gizmo open side.jpg Gizmo open back.jpg Gizmo completely open.jpg

The back mechanism is like many older barrettes. The round part with the cameo on it is hinged; you have to pinch it a little to release it from the small hooks that hold it closed. The diameter of the ring is approx. 1 inch/25mm. When closed, the length is no more than 2 inches/51mm. OK, folks, what is it? I have my own speculation but don't know if it is sartorially plausible.

Not everything that gets patented/registered is successful. Suspect my gizmo & OP's fall into this category.

Agree. That means it was made any time after the date of registration.;)
I know it was, so you're absolutely right!
Be fair, she gave the exact day of the month.:joyful:

    Looks likely.:)

 A barette with an added thingie to pass a lock of hair through? For a specific hairstyle?
