I went to an estate sale near New Bedford this morning. There was loads of historic items from the seaports of the area including whaling & sailing memorabilia and lots of colonial period antiques. The only thing I bought was this large charcoal piece done by a distant ancestor of mine, E.B. Coggeshall in 1876. The sale was just off Coggeshall st.
Looks so much like our beach with the rocks.

 

How great for you to get that charcoal back in the family, Anund! Did you know it was in the sale beforehand?

Talk about "when you see one, there will be more in your future." Look what I got yesterday for 2 bucks!



(In case you missed it, I found 4 Deruta mugs in the same pattern last weekend.)

 

Bakers, I've picked up an awful lot of Deruta (for home USE!) for PEANUTS lately.

Is Deruta perhaps "not recognized" by the sellers, or is it completely "out of vogue" right now???

 

I couldn't tell you, C. The pitcher definitely looked "out of place" in this old fellow's driveway, though. And why it was out there with him and not inside where his ladywife was "selling" a vast array of dusty old pottery and glass of no particular interest to me was also a mystery.

But I did find 2 other things to buy from him - the August 1974 edition of The Antiques Journal and the June 1984 edition of Art and Antiques. 25 cents a piece.



On the front of the Journal someone had written p. 20. So I flipped to that page to see what they wanted to remember. Special for @komokwa

Bakers, yes, there were a few other paintings by him, way overpriced for my budget. The sale was for the Fairhaven Colonial Club, liquidating their collection due to losing the house that was donated to them by the Coggeshall family back in 1916.

 

Oh dear. What a shame. Good for you to get it, of course, but still.

Here are some of my finds - 7' Union Jack, MCM tantalus with a lock but no key, then some keys that I think are for a grenade, this fabulous Persian Lamb's Wool and fur coat - I love the hanger, a couple of Hudson's Bay Blankets, Tortoise shell magnifying glass, copper pitcher which I suspect should have a lid, by SPV Denmark, a light-up Bumble for Christmas and the best pretzels I have had in years - a new business that was set up at the local market, he will do well I think.

 

Love the pitcher, and the Bumble - and those pretzels look amazing. Makin me hungry

One of my sisters likes Bumble a lot and has one very similar to that on top of her refrigerator! My favorite of what you showed, cxgirl, is the magnifying glass in tortoiseshell case.

 

Stopped by a yard sale on the way to the grocery store and found this adorable little Dedham repro jar for a whole .50 ! The gorham butter bucket was $2. Mind you,I have zero use or room for anything,but..... !
